Law, Policy, and Governance

“The Law, Policy, and Governance competency area includes the knowledge, skills, and dispositions relating to policy development processes used in various contexts, the application of legal constructs, compliance/policy issues, and the understanding of governance structures and their impact on one’s professional practice” (ACPA & NASPA, 2015, p. 22).

“Describe the student conduct process at the institutional level and demonstrate concern for the legal, social, moral, educational, and ethical expectations of the community” (NASPA & ACPA, 2015, p. 22)

  • During my time as a graduate student, I spent a semester on the University Conduct Committee, a semester as a University Conduct Officer, and a year as a Residential Conduct Officer. This has allowed me to gain a full understanding of the institution’s student conduct process and the various expectations of being a member of the university community.

“Explain concepts of risk management, reasonable accommodation, and enact liability reduction strategies” (NASPA & ACPA, 2015, p. 22)

  • As the Student Alumni Connection Graduate Intern, I participated in a travel training for student organization advisors, which was focused on my role within the risk management process of travel.

  • For all Student Alumni Connection events, I prepared liability waivers and developed emergency contingency plans. Throughout this process, I gained foundational knowledge of concepts related to managing risks at the organizational, departmental, and university level.

“Identify major internal and external stakeholders, policymakers, and special interest groups who influence policy at the national, state/provincial, local, and institutional levels” (NASPA & ACPA, 2015, p. 22)

  • In Media and Communication 6550: Organizational Communication, I read about examining stakeholders within an organization. I then applied this knowledge to a final institutional communication plan, which involved analysis of various university stakeholders, policymakers, and interest groups.
